The sad story of Chen Deping, a 19-year-old from Hubei who broke her back trying to escape from a prostitution gang, touched the hearts of South China Morning Post readers.

The Post has received generous donations from readers and touching messages of support for the young woman, who travelled to Guangzhou in the hope of earning money for her family but fell victim to violent criminals who forced her into sexual slavery.

 

By yesterday morning, $98,000 had been donated. The money will be used for an operation which Ms Chen needs to give her a chance to walk again. Luo Dixin , the doctor overseeing her care at the Guangdong No 2 People's Hospital, said pins could be inserted into Ms Chen's lumbar vertebrae to repair the damage. The operation is expected to cost 50,000 yuan, if imported products are used, and another 10,000 yuan is needed for a follow-up operation.

 

Excess funds received by the Post will be used to pay for medicine Ms Chen needs and for her rehabilitation. We would appreciate feedback from our readers on how best to spend any money left over.

 

Funds could be used to pay for some of Ms Chen's living expenses so that she can fully recover and find employment. Another option is to donate the money to a credible charity catering for the needs of troubled migrant workers.

 

The Post will keep in touch with Ms Chen and publish updates on her progress, both in the newspaper and on scmp.com. We will also keep readers informed of how the money is being spent.

    今天一上班就接连收到几封邮件，询问今日稿子里说的湖北女孩情况和捐款方式。
    这么多人打电话到报社关注这个稿子和这个女孩还是让我感到惊讶的，因为我上次对河南女孩王娇的类似遭遇报道后，没有收到任何查询和捐助，让我严重质疑了一次SCMP的影响力，这次算是挽回吧。
    由于电话太多，最后财务部决定成立一个帐号，先接收捐助款，之后再让我直接转交给这个女孩子其男朋友。后来接的几个电话中，确实让我感到一些悲哀。
    一：内地猖獗的诈骗和无处不在的腐败，让他们在捐款时候也开始担心钱是否会真到他们想捐助者的手上。香港人在慈善捐助方面思维一向比较简单，也十分相信募捐者，因此香港街头十分多募捐者，你捐些钱一些义工只会在你衣服上贴个小纸。希望工程刚开始被宣扬到香港的时候，反向也很大，很多人捐款，但后来发生了希望工程基金到大陆后被政府贪污挪用的事，且被香港媒体暴光了，由此希望工程在香港也失去了公信力，很多香港大学生放假会愿意亲自到内地贫困地区，直接找到需要帮助的人，我们那时去英德岩背就见过几个。
    二：现行的医疗体制，穷人没钱几乎可以等死。这女孩因为没钱付医疗费用，可以被搁在病床上两个星期。在香港和西方很多万恶的资本主义社会，或许贫穷的社会主义兄弟国家，如贫困的朝鲜，治病都是免费的，我们不但收费，还要吸血般地收。又有人肯定会说：我们国家这么大，人这么多，公费医疗不可能实现，呵呵，我每天上下班都看到友谊商店门口全是宝马凌志之类的红牌车，而且都是非法占道停车……实现公费医疗确实不切实际，但现在完全可以建立一套农民和城市贫困人群的医疗救济体系，设立相关国家救济金。
    呵呵，又要被人说我反动了……

A 19-year-old's dreams of a job and a brighter future for her family were shattered when she broke her back trying to escape from a gang that was forcing her into sexual slavery.

Chen Deping, from Shiyan in Hubei , jumped from the fifth-floor of a building in Guangzhou's Haizhu district on June 1, landing on a canopy, which broke her fall. Since then, she has been in Guangdong No2 People's Hospital, too poor to afford an operation that could spare her from being crippled.

 

Ms Chen's body is covered in bruises. She cannot sit up and is in constant pain. Boyfriend Liu Yunlong , a farm worker, also said she sometimes could not control her bladder.

"I don't know what we can do or who can help me," she said. "We are totally helpless."

A doctor said Ms Chen had suffered a fracture to her lumbar vertebra that could leave her a paraplegic, especially if she did not receive an operation.

 

But without any money, Ms Chen has been left bedridden for almost two weeks. Mr Liu has begged the government and police for help, but to no avail.

Mr Liu said he planned to take Ms Chen back home this week because he was concerned they would have no money left for the journey if she stayed in hospital, which costs more than 80 yuan a day, even though it had only provided some pills.

 

Ms Chen said both their families were poor. The couple had been given 1,000 yuan in donations, but owed the hospital about 800 yuan after staying in the ward for 10 days. "I am terrified I will not be able to stand up again," said a tearful Ms Chen. "I really regret coming to Guangzhou."

Ms Chen travelled to Guangzhou on May 29 after a friend said she could get a job that paid 1,000 yuan a month. But instead of a job, she was taken hostage and tortured by two men and a woman. She was raped by one of the men on May 31 and forced into prostitution that night after she was spotted trying to call the police.

 

Police have made one arrest in connection with the case.

Ms Chen said her family was too poor to give her an education. She had worked as a migrant worker since the age of 14 and had a job in Hebei before heading to Guangzhou, where her dream of finding work to support her family was shattered.

She said her mother was mute and her father was a farmer who earned a meagre income, adding she had to pay for her younger brother's school fees.

 

"I am worried that my brother cannot continue his studies if I am not able to work in the future," said Ms Chen, who is just one of many young women who have met a similar fate, with prostitution gangs throughout the mainland destroying the lives and futures of an unknown number of village girls.

In March, a 15-year-old girl from Henan was held hostage and tortured for a week in Guangzhou by a suspected prostitution gang and jumped from the sixth floor of a building in a suicide attempt.

Last August in Shenzhen, abductors tattooed the characters for "prostitute" on the foreheads of two teenage Hunan girls and forced them to become sex workers.

       呵呵，好象又好久没有更新了，时间过得太快了， 上星期上班都在期待周末，谁知周末一下就过了，哎~~明天又要开始上班鸟。

       我的惰性还是蛮强的，每个周日下午就开始觉得不爽，因为第二天又要开始上班。一般都是周二开始又会习惯，然后象轮子一样滚到周五，其间盼着周末。

       这个周末回学校打球又见到那个估计有7、8十岁的老伯，大一进来的时候已经在球场上见到过他，后来也一起打过几次球。记忆中他一直都是全身贴满风湿铁打膏（夸张点了，但周身关节几乎都贴），但这次看到竟然没贴了，而且比之前还健硕很多，抢到球后不停地在练两步半。

       当时心想自己到他年纪时候不知道是否还如此健康，此时觉得羡慕公务员等几乎定时下班的人，如果我能每天都5点下班，一定会常去打球跑步，然后再回家洗澡吃饭～～可惜工作了这么久，几乎没有感受过这个城市五六点的下班人流......

       周日下午去买了两张据说可以防辐射防静电的屏幕防护板，一块家里用，一块公司电脑用。在电脑长期坐着，特别是公司，老觉得有无数粒子往脸上飞，这虽属妄想症，但老觉得在公司电脑前坐上半小时，脸部就特别疲劳和干燥。

      准备睡觉，这个星期开始练习早睡，口可口可。

　   劫匪制函数图推算成功概率
　　采用古代战术分析单身女子夜间出现特点，已被深圳南山检方批捕

　　本报讯　(记者周玉　通讯员李燕)抢劫之前，徐某竟然绘制函数曲线图，以此推算抢劫成功几率。昨日，记者从深圳南山区检察院获悉，只有高中文化的徐某已被批捕。

　　日前，南山检察院批捕一名抢劫疑犯徐某。经侦查发现，21岁的徐某只有高中文化，在实施抢劫行为前，竟然绘制了一张关于抢劫的函数曲线图，以时间为X轴、单身女人出现几率为Y轴，由此来计算或推导自己的抢劫成功几率，并且对自己准备作案前的心理及作案手段、方式都作了细致的总结，真可谓煞费苦心。

　　据了解，这张函数图X轴分列时间点：19：30－20：15－21：15－22：15－22：30－23：15，并作出如下分析：夜间单身女子出现几率最大的时间是晚上8：15－晚9：15，几率最小的是晚10：30－晚11：15，由此判断夜间随着时间推移，有机会向单身女人下手的几率越少，并自我分析认为，在精力方面呈现一而足、再而衰、三而竭，在心理方面呈现“怕”、“懒”和“良心未泯”的弱点，比如怕女人反抗、怕失败被捕入狱；行动不坚决，犹犹豫豫拖时间；心不够狠，手不够辣，错失良机。

　　徐某针对上述各种情况定下几方面的应对措施：一见到机会，抓住就上，决不犹豫；时间上要准，即在民警与其他人多的空隙间；速度上要快，迅雷不及掩耳之势，不做则已，一做如箭；动作上要稳，心冷力稳，重击其要害。

　　此外，徐某在作案工具方面做了精心的准备，包括一把水果刀、两条尼龙绳、一条毛巾、一条布块、一对胶手套等，通常以在偏僻处行走的单身女子为目标。

　　办案的检察人员认为，在这份函数曲线图中，犯罪嫌疑人徐某采用我国古代的战术，可见准备既充分又细致，显示了犯罪分子的主观恶性，“借此提醒单身女子夜间出门要小心，减少给犯罪分子可乘之机！”

A former senior Guangdong work safety official arrested over last year’s Daxing coal mine tragedy will face court in Guangzhou today (THURS) accused of dereliction of duty and taking bribes.

 

Hu Jianchang, 57, former deputy director of the Guangdong Bureau of Work Safety, will go on trial in the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court for accepting more than 100,000 yuan in bribes from the mine owner and illegally issuing safety certificates to the Daxing mine.

 
Court spokeswoman Yang Xiaomei said a verdict would not be handed down today. She would not speculate on when a decision would be delivered.

 

In all, 123 miners were killed at the Daxing colliery, in Meizhou, when it flooded on August 7. Hu was detained one month after the accident and was arrested on October 13th.

According to the Guangzhou People's Procuratorate, Hu first accepted bribes from mine chairman Zeng Yungao in July 2003 during a safety inspection trip to Xingning.

 

The procurator said the initial payment was HK$10,000 but Hu accepted several more envelopes with Hong Kong dollars from Zeng.

The procurator said that in return Hu turned a blind eye to Zeng's lack of permits for the site and issued a safety certificate himself for the operation June 7, two months before the pit was flooded.

Nearly two dozen government officials, including several senior staff at the work safety authority, have been punished for duty dereliction and/or taking bribes. Sixteen were jailed for up to six years in March and former vice-governor You Ningfeng was also disciplined.

The Xingning People's Court is also due to hear cases against 18 mine investors and staff on Monday.

The News Express Daily reported Zeng would face five criminal charges relating to bribery, tax evasion, liability for a major accident, illegal mining and destroying accounting records.

Reports said Zeng had strong ties to senior local administrators and was a deputy to local people's congress and a local police officer.

The accident spurred Guangdong authorities to close all coal mines in the province.

Corruption is rampant in the mainland's coal mine industry because many government officials have become "protective umbrellas" for illegal mines in return for shares in the businesses or bribes.
